Drawing upon the honky-tonk sounds of long ago and the rock `n' roll spirit of more recent yesteryears, the Picketts have carved themselves out a place in the modern-day Seattle scene, as well as a solid Northwest audience and regional followings in California and Texas. They've got a deep enough well of musical knowledge to dig up everything from Boudleaux Bryant to Yoko Ono, and their original songs sound so classic and timeless that they seem like they must have already been around for decades. --adapted from the liner notes by Chester CharleyThis product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. I stumbled across the Picketts recordings which was the first I'd heard of them. I never saw them in concert, but I wish I had - sadly the Pickett aren't together anymore, it seems. On this album they have a strong rockabilly back-beat, intelligent, snappy lyrics, brilliant guitar playing, and a sound that mixes country, honky-tonk, rock, and pop. Standouts are: Sukiyaki (as mentioned above), which was a frothy Japanese/American 60's pop hit that the Picketts turned into part hoof-pounding Western movie theme, part Dick Dale surf-music instrumental. Awesome! Then there's "Boat Song" a country/rockabilly tune with angsty lyrics you can boogie to. "Dying Ain't Much of a Living" is another toe-tapper - an anthem for wimpy guys standing up by slinking away.Oh, and take a listen to their Euphonium album. There's Roy Orbison influenced number there, "Night Fell" that knocked my socks off. Wistful, sparse, and gritty all at the same time.
