Il Divo, the worlds foremost classical crossover group, release their stunning new album WICKED GAME. This phenomenal quartet - Carlos Marin from Spain, Sebastien Izambard from France, David Miller from the US and Urs Buhler from Switzerland return with their most impressive album since their 2004 debut defined a new musical genre. The new album includes the title track "Wicked Game," "Dov'e L'amore" (a beautiful interpretation of Samuel Barbers "Adagio for Strings"), "Come What May" from the soundtrack of MOULIN ROUGE and a long awaited recording of "Time to Say Goodbye."
I love Il Divo and have since they started recording having collected all their CD's and DVD's. (As a passionate opera fan these are the only "pop, crossover" singers that I do collect. I have the 3 Michaels; Michael Feinstein, Michael Buble and Michael Ball, but all else are opera stars. In comparison with previous albums, I'm just not as enamored with the songs on this album as some of the previous ones. Of all the tracks, I think that "Time to Say Goodbye" is probably my favorite. I can't stand Boccelli and Brightman and would not ever listen to their version unless hogtied. I also wish they would furnish English translations in the album booklet for those of use not fluent in the languages in which they sing - a minor complaint, however. I'm also not usually familiar with the popular songs they record but they have enough that I know or at least learn to like very much. If you like the songs on the album, you would probably grant the 5 star rating.I take nothing away from their performance on this album, as the 3 stars was for the song quality NOT their performance which is, as usual, excellent. I don't really care much for "Wicked Game" and had hoped they would perform some songs in a slightly more classical genre as they are so capable and Seb's voice and technique have improved so much. Carlos, David and Urs, of course, can sing anything; but a little Puccini, Verdi, Bizet, even Gershwin, would be welcome. Their treatment would be interesting and who knows - the world may embrace such an album. The duets from Don Carlos and The Pearl Fishers come to mind - ummm - would like to hear them try those two numbers.I'm also disappointed in the number of songs - 10 tracks is a lean album compared to many that I buy with as many as 17 - 20 tracks. They are still improving the pop genre but I think they are so accomplished now that they could really take some classical or opera risks with their next album - that was what I hoped this one would be and wasn't. I'll keep listening to my favorite previous albums more than this one but glad I have a complete collection. Also, very happy they are still together and ready for another world tour; I hope to catch at least one live performance. This may appeal more to younger fans than those of us who have so many years of great music in our heads. I'd like to hear them perform some more challenging compositions next time is all.I have seen them in person and can only say if you like their albums - see them in person as they are much, much more exciting live and in concert! They will blow you away in person if you love their sound - and I certainly do!Purchased this CD after purchasing Special Edition of CD,DVD and Book. I bought it as a back up ANNNND I wanted the CD Photo! LOL. On the special Edition, CD was fine but I was disappointed in the quality of the so-called (cardboard) protective covers for CD and DVD. If you do not place them into their protective sleeves with the album title against the folded-in edges, they can easily be scratched and damaged. DVD was a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! Not the song selection, and their voices were wonderfull as usual, but the filming and editing were not good. On closeups, the boy's heads (just above the hairline) was consistantly cut off. Too many shots of the audience and orchestra, too much camera jumping around on the film clips. Also, the book was not that great. Some beautiful photos but I guess Carlos just wanted himself to be known as a "Ladies Man", how boring! Out of 21 photos, there are 9 photos where he is surrounded by 6 women,4 women, 3 women, and 2 of 1 women. The flirtyness on stage is ok, but after a while it just seems sleazy, certainly not classy. I think he needs a new writer who can write something funny, sexy, but ELEGANT. Some of it just seems inappropriate, (Not in this performance) as when they are singing "Everytime I Look At You" when Carlos sings the verse "and with you lying next to me, feels like I can hardly breathe" his actions seem to take away something of David's tenderness on the following verse "I close my eyes the moment I surrender to you." So,as I wrote, somewhat disappointing for a special edition that was pre-ordered and cost over $100.00. So, even though I stand behind the above opinion, I still love Il Divo and am looking forward to the next album release!!!!I don't suppose it does anything for a guy's masculine credibility to admit liking this stuff, but...well. In the right mood, this sort of overly dramatic, over-the-top take on some great songs like "Wicked Game," "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," and "Falling Slowly" are just the thing.I'd never heard of Il Divo until they appeared on "Who's Got Talent?" last summer, and they did "Wicked Game," a truly haunting song in the original by Chris Isaak that they covered with an operatic verve that gave me the shivers. I'm a sucker for "big" music, from Guns N'Roses' "November Rain" to Meat Loaf's "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That" to "'Lascia ch'io pianga" from Rinaldo. This is lavish, sometimes doofy music-making, hammy but affecting.Call it a guilty pleasure, but a well-harmonized and overly interpreted "Crying" sung in Spanish ("Llorando") is just what I'm in the mood for sometimes. If you're man enough--or just sappy romantic enough--maybe you will be, too. Some have commented on the less-than-perfect arrangements and musicianship of this recording, and that's probably fair to say, but the vocals are so much the star of the show that other considerations fade by comparison."Wicked Game" probably won't go into heavy rotation on your car CD system or anything, but as a pseudo-classical break from frothy pop, one could do much worse. Not their best CD.I have to say i love these guys voices which for me is were this album falls down on from there previous. I just find that even though the quality is i have to say just the same out of this world 100% fantastic, who ever picked the final tracks just did not look hard enough, because the tracks picked just did not allow the guys to really use those fantastic voices which each of them posses. Even though i got all the way through the album there was very few tracks which really grabbed me as there music should do,I am sorry but there was just to much disco music in there that just was not worthy of there special treatment.I am sorry guys but this one i felt like you were going a bit backwards you just have to find better material which is suited for your heavenly voices, we demand it and so do your voices. I will eagerly await the next album anyways.I have just received this Il Divo Special Edition of Wicked Game. I must say is absolutely lovely, full of beautifully black and white photos of the boys. And what can I say about the new album... in one word, it is just amazing how they put together beautiful songs and create such a glorious harmonies. My favourite songs here are: "Come what may" and the classic "Time to say goodbye (Con te partiro)". And the DVD from the concert in London was fantastic. I had the privilege to see the guys perform in my country, Perú and I have to say that was one of the best concerts I have ever been. Definitely, they had move a step forward in every record they have released so far.I was lucky enough to see Il Divo live in Cardiff (5 rows from the front and in the middle of the centre block) last Sunday when they sang most of the tracks on this album. I may be a bit biased as have been a massive fan since first seeing them on Parky, when they were promotoing their first CD. Obviously the live atmosphere is not there but this CD is as near as it can get. No superlative is good enough to describe their wonderful singing. Perhaps I need to add some DVD's to my collection!Seven years on and still going strong. Not my favourite album (hence the four stars) but still good and can relax you just as fast as a good drink and warm bath when listened to.Time to Say Goodbye (Con Te Partirò) is the standout track of the album, never thought a version could compete with the original by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman but it comes damn close!Another problem free delivery through Amazon. I love the free postage as well. If you don't want next day delivery it is worth waiting to get the postage free. I also like the e-mail alerts when despatched Amazon always keeps you in the loop. The album itself is some sort of foreign copy though, as when I loaded it on to my computer in the office the titles came up in some sort of arabic. The CD does not show this, - this is not a complaint - just an observation and does not effect the Cd itself.
