When a princess with the ability to absorb and transfer life force energy discovers her mother, the queen, is manipulating her, she works with unexpected allies to steal the throne, battling magic-induced anxiety and unexpected attractions along the way. Astrid is a vygora-a rare being that can absorb one's life force energy and transfer it to another with only a touch. Only two people know what she's truly capable of: her best friend, Ilona, and her mother, the Queen of Hakran, a powerful myndox. When foreign royalty and their handsome guard, Dashiel Dargan, show up unexpectedly with the ability to mute myndox manipulation, Astrid discovers she's been a prisoner to her mother's power her entire life, and she's not the only one. Faced with a lifetime of memories built on lies, she's caught between the story she thinks she knows, and the one she doesn't remember. But when she can't trust anyone, how can she figure out which story is true?
"I'm not in the mood to murder someone tonight, but I must."These Wicked Lies was recommended to me by a friend and I'm so glad she brought TWL to my attention!Miranda created a super unique fantasy world in TWL that I was drawn into immediately and needed to learn more about. (Not joking- from the very first sentence).I loved how resigned the FMC, Astrid, is to her fate in the beginning of the story. Her growth and decisions to take charge of her life were compelling. Astrid's emotions in the story run the gamut. I couldn't connect with all of her emotional changes in the moment, but boy did I understand exactly what was happening at the end! What. A. Ride! Friends, I thought I knew where this story was going, but I had absolutely no freaking idea! The twists are SO SO good!I know you're all wondering is there is any romance, enter Dashiel stage left. We meet him early on in the story, and I loved how my view of him changed as the story progressed (no spoilers here, folks!). TWL gets spicy a couple of times, and Miranda handled those scenes wonderfully. As if I couldn't love this story and the characters enough, Miranda introduced a brand new character around the 60% mark who I immediately loved and needed to know everything about. How did she do that with a character so late in the game?! It's a complete testament to how great she is at storytelling and how wonderful her writing is.I loved the characters! I loved the story! I LOVED the twists, and the ending?! Fabulous! I cannot wait for These Wicked Truths!"We need emotions to feel alive. But too few harden us, and too many weaken us. Let yourself feel, if that's what you need to do. You have me, and I won't let you drown.""Be careful with that blade, luv. Some men enjoy the threat of violence.""I did not see that coming".Same, Callan. Same.
