A funny, intelligent farce of the extremes of politics and ideology in a world where the absolute power of men in society is beginning to crumble. Lord Randall is an ambitious politician who, in spite of his starlet good-looks and reputation, is at heart much more concerned for the plight of the unprivileged than he is in keeping up appearances and standing up for his family name. He has a powerful ally and dreaded enemy in Isabella, the daughter of a banker who has risen to wealth by sheer will and by her gift with numbers. Randall and Isabella usually fight like cats and dogs but when their bank is threatened, their individual sense of competition drives them to up-one one another on who can track down the rogue who foiled them and make him pay. Their adventures is at times hilarious, at times over-the top, but always charming and always sexually and romantically charged. Isabella is at times enervating with her social awkwardness, but she is an unerring business genius, a no-nonsense pragmatist at heart, and most definitely the engine that drives this couple's romantic adventure. Randall is well meaning, but a little blindsided by his own beauty and the flattery and fawning that accompanies it, which prevents him at first from appreciating Isabella's virtues, and, in his own way, he is also naive, as he's unable to foresee the scheming that his political nemesis sets up for him. Isabella's and Randall's triumph in the end is satisfying as, when the two decide to come together, they must give up their individual emotional fortresses and acknowledge each other's strength. Their triumphant romance is a nod as well to the age of gender-shared governance that history is ushering in. Funny, clever, fast paced, it is a thoroughly enjoyable and sexy read, especially if you like lovably flawed characters and farcical romantic comedy.
