While this is a Region 1 DVD it has NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES.The film features Tomisaburo Wakayama of Lone Wolf and Cub fame. The film gets its name from the fact that Wakayama’s character Shinkai is a womanizing, fighting, gambling monk that knows martial arts in 1920s Japan. That was assisted by the fact that Wakayama was highly accomplished in judo in real life. His monk look of a shaved head also makes him resemble his brother Shintaro Katsu who was famous for his role as Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman. In fact, in one scene he even plays a blind masseur like Zatoichi. The first act of the movie establishes Shinkai’s character. The trouble begins when he come into conflict with some local Yakuza (gangsters). He also has problems with a fellow martial arts priest named Ryotatsu played by Bunta Sugarawa. This eventually leads to big two confrontations that close the movie. While Wicked Priest isn’t the greatest it still has its moments. There’s some light comedy and some action scenes. Shinkai is split between his bad side and trying to help out the common people. The biggest problem is there are no subtitles in this release.
